Claire Villars, as usual, gave a good insight into what had made the vintage "it was as much by concentration as maturity - it was a slow maturation, but the grapes were dried by lack of water at the same time, so the acidity was concentrated too", going on to say that the low 35hl/ha yield in the Cabernet which resulted from the small berries was "a bit of a cold shower". She made a very gentle extraction in the press, and the press wines were very good, but even so only 1% went into the final blend - the base wines is so good and so structured. Ferrière is around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (a high proportion in Margaux), 5% Cabernet Franc, and 35% Merlot in 100% new barrels, but there was no sense of oakiness in the wine. Very deep black colour, fat, tannins smooth, fruit really concentrated, weighty, cassis with a tantalising freshness. A long, expressive wine. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2010)

The nose has opened up with some sweet black fruit but the tannins are still firm rather closing down the middle. Towards the back the ripeness comes through with blackcurrant and bramble very much in evidence. 2020-40 Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 90 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Ferriere '09 is a little disjointed on the nose at the moment and lifted floral notes and an agreeable sense of space and airiness. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy, iodine tinged entry. It is sweet and rounded in the mouth, although it does not show great weight, but the finish is long and graceful, underpinned by fine tannins. Lovely. Tasted January 2013. Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2013)

Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and musky game, with a strong leafy, herbal component. Offers moderate fruit intensity and density but comes across as a bit lean and green, even pinched for the year. Finishes slightly green and dry, with decent length. Lacks the dimension for a higher score. Rating: 87 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2012)

Château Ferrière

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 The Ferrière family owned their eponymous estate from its origins in the 18th Century right up until 1914. During the 20th Century, Château Ferrière's star fell considerably with the vineyard leased to Alexis Lichine and the wine made at Château Lascombes, and Château Ferrière was rarely seen or known outside France. Ferrière was purchased by the Taillan Group (who own, among others, Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen) in 1988, and the story since then has been of continued improvement. The connection with Château Lascombes was ended and all wines are made at Château Ferrière now. Château Ferrière is the smallest of the Cru Classé estates, with just 8ha of vines dispersed around the centre of Margaux village. 80% are Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (60% new). Both in terms of quality and availability, Château Ferrière is unrecognisable from where it was a few short years ago. Classic, gently assertive Margaux and excellent value for money.
