CHÂTEAU MEYNEY

Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

The 2009 Meyney marks the point where I believe the wines become more interesting. The nose features ample red berry fruit, red plum, raspberry preserve and sloes mixed with Christmas cake and earthy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite Haut-Marbuzet in style, leading to a lush but very nicely structured, lightly spiced finish that reveals cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. This is definitely worth seeking out. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2020)

Few, if any, of St. Estephe's non-classed growths have better terroir than Meyney, and this property's 2009 and 2010 vintages are exciting wines. The 2009 almost seems to smell of clay, and hugely slabby, tannic and rich on the palate. There's no shortage of fruit though, buried beneath its lavish, chewy tannins. Great fun, and great value, too. Drink 2012-2025 (July 2012 issue) Rating: ****16.5 Decanter Magazine (Jun 2012)

While the 2009 is a good effort, this property has not yet returned to the form it possessed in the seventies and early eighties. The cleanly made 2009 reveals notes of dusty black currants, spice box, earth, and licorice, and a medium-bodied, fresh, lively style. It just lacks the extra dimension encountered in most 2009s. Drink it over the next 10 years. Rating: 86-88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2010)

There is just a little over-ripeness on the nose here: blackberry, a touch of prune and dried apricot/fruitcake, although the definition is fine. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, furry tannins, black fruit laced with tar and cedar, good depth on the powerful, ripe finish. If this Meyney can lose that tincture of sur-maturite on the nose (and instinct tells me it will), then this could be the best Meyney in years. Bravo! Château Meyney

Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.

The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.

In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
