CHÂTEAU JOANIN BÉCOT

2009 Côtes de Castillon

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Côtes de Castillon
ABV 14%

Flashy, fleshy and fun, this deep colored wine is packed with black licorice, espresso bean, plum liqueur, black cherry and smoke. Rich in texture, full bodied and concentrated with loads of juicy, ripe, black fruit and soft tannins, this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc will drink well young and age for at least a decade. This is my favorite vintage from Juliette Becot and Joanin Becot yet! Rating: 92 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (Aug 2014)

There is a lot of fruit on the nose and the sweetness of the fruit enriches the palate. Blackcurrant is there with behind is black cherry and firmer sloe. Layers of fruit give lots of complexity. 2014-26 Rating: 85-89 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

An intense wine from the Becot family (Michel Rolland is the consultant), this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc was cropped at a very low 25.5. hectoliters per hectare. The wine has an opaque ruby/purple color and a big, projected nose of red and black fruits, toasty oak, graphite, and a hint of burning embers. A large-scaled wine at 14.5% alcohol, with the requisite glycerin and unctuous texture, this is a thick, juicy, very pure and impressively well-made wine from one of the most fashionable satellites of the Cotes de Bordeaux (Castillon), and thus kudos should go to proprietress Julliette Becot. Drink it over the next decade. Rating: 91+ Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Oct 2013)

Château Joanin Bécot

A small (4.5 hectare) property when bought by the Bécot family of Beauséjour Bécot in 2001, this has been gradually expanded to 11.5ha. High up (300m) on the Castillon sector to the east of Saint Emilion, near Château d'Aiguilhe, in a sector called Joanon, whence the name, to which the Bécot family added theirs. It is on a soil like the Saint Emilion plateau, chalky clay and calcaire d'asteries, the limestone with fossilized stafish common to the area. It is run like a garden by Juliette Bécot, and the wine treated to the same care and attention as a cru classé. The vinification includes a cooling of the must with dry ice and a period of cold maceration lasting five days, followed by rather a Burgundian style fermentation with pigeage. The wine is aged for between 16 and 18 months in barrel, with 75% new wood. It has always shown well at primeur tastings with bright fruit and well-defined supple juiciness.
