CHÂTEAU LAFAURIE PEYRAGUEY

2009 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13%

Very yellow gold. Sauvignon on the nose. Starts seeming not all that sweet, and then builds. Good weight. Seems very embryonic, unformed, but all there and with good length at the same time. Rating: 93? L&S (Apr 2010)

The 2009 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey is rich and honeyed on the nose: Manuka honey, mandarin, dried peach and marmalade emerging with aeration and demonstrated great vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp line of acidity. There is fine tension in the mouth, very focused and pure with tension on the penetrating finish. There is an appealing “attack” on the 2009 and an impressive spicy aftertaste that lingers long after the wine has gone. Drinking range: 2016 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2014)

Bright medium-deep gold. Captivating aromas of tangerine, peach and honey are complemented by flowers and a sexy oak note of coconut. Highly concentrated, fresh and sweet, with gloriously pure, marmalady botrytis tones complicating the citrus, caramelized banana, toffee and peach flavors. Rich and creamy yet wonderfully balanced thanks to plenty of acidity, this impressive young Sauternes finishes with palate-staining length and lingering hints of white pepper and ginger. Rating: 91-94 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website

There is some SO2 masking the nose here, which is difficult to assess. However, the palate is well balanced with fine minerality, bright citrus fruit, orange zest, a touch of white peach and apricot, good tension towards the finish with a dash of lemongrass on the aftertaste. There is very good weight and botrytis on this Lafaurie Peyraguey that linger seductively. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 This was originally a fortification built at least as long ago as the 13th Century. By 1618, it was the home of Sieur Raymond Peyraguey. The vineyard business was developed by the Baron de Pichard, who bought the estate in 1742. Unfortunately for him, he lost his head in the Revolution and his château and vineyards were sold to a M. Lafaurie. The first half of the 19th Century saw Lafaurie-Peyraguey's reputation rise from nearly unknown to being ranked 3rd, behind ChâteauLa Tour Blanche and near neighbour Château d'Yquem in 1855. In 1879 a small portion of the estate was didvided off to become Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey. In 1917, Lafaurie-Peyraguey was bought by Désiré Cordier, who owned it until they sold to the Suez Group in 1984. The 40ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. The grapes are hand-picked and the wine fermented in wood, before ageing for 18 to 20 months.
