CLIMAT NO. 2

2009 Domaine de Pierre, Lionel Gosseaume

Grapes Sauv Blanc, Meslier Saint François
Colour White
Origin France, Loire
ABV 13%

We were bowled over when we tasted this back in January as a tank sample, but then very disappointed when it closed up after bottling. We have just re-tasted it, and at last it is back - and more. Lovely nose with twining scented aromas of lemon, elderflower, passion fruit and honeysuckle, and all this continues onto the palate with sherbety brightness in a full body. A half and half blend of Meslier Saint François with Sauvignon. Meslier Saint François is an all but extinct grape variety which was known to make huge yields of high-acid wine (so much so that the wine was exported to Germany as the base-wine for Sekt), but by pruning hard enough to keep the yields down, Lionel has succeeded in making a fascinating wine with extra spicy tropical fruit notes. Tracking down an example of Meslier-Saint-François has been somewhat more challenging, but it is made a little easier by the work of Lionel Gosseaume, who has been carefully tending a 0.3-hectare plot of this variety. This is located in what Lionel calls Climat No. 2, and it is blended with Sauvignon Blanc in this wine, name for the lieu-dit of origin. The vines are aged between 30 and 35 years, the fruit once picked fermented in steel at low temperature, then held in tank for 29 months prior to bottling. In the glass the wine has a pale straw hue, offering nothing unusual. That cannot be said of the aromatics though, which are fascinating, exuberant and yet tight and weedy at the same time. There are aromas of stinging nettles and freshly pulled dandelions, but also sweeter element, the fruit profile suggestive of pears and peaches, sprinkled with notes of white pepper. The palate delivers more texture than would be brought to the table by a pure Sauvignon Blanc, the feel of it full and yet fresh, stony and yet slightly perfumed too. It feels ever-so-slightly minerally, has a touch of grip, leading into a rather appealing phenolic bite in the finish. It has a little length too. Overall, this is a fascinating, esoteric and very enjoyable wine. Rating: 16.5/20 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Sept 2013)

Sauvignon Blanc and Meslier St-Francis from Touraine. Wild nose – waxy/ honeyed and lots of untamed greenness. Really interesting! Relatively astringent. 2012-2017 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2013)

A fresh little number, made from 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Meslier Saint François - a local grape that's practically extinct and is so acidic it was once sent off to Germany to be used as a base wine for Sekt - but nonetheless, here it lends a tightly packed green apple freshness to the grassiness of the Sauvignon, but there's a firm texture too - perhaps from its sojourn in old foudres. Domaine de Pierre, Lionel Gosseaume

Having spent 15 years working for a very powerful French Union, the equivalent of our NFU - Lionel decided he’d like to go back to the family tradition of wine-making. His brother had already taken over the family domaine from his father. So he bought a small domaine for himself, very close to the family's plots in the Oisly appellation of Touraine. And so was started Domaine de Pierre in 2007 - with 9 Hectares. He was wary of getting ahead of himself and building a winery straight away, so he used the family cellars for the first few years until he built his own winery in 2014. He now has 28 hectares under vine and - this will soon be 30 as he continues to plant more. (Also he is considering buying another domaine - 25km away - in the AC of Touraine Chenonceaux which is another 20 HA)

The recently built winery is very understated. From the outside this could be any agricultural shed with a scruffy yard around it. When we visited in September, mid-harvest it resembled a sort of ‘Mad Max like’ outpost with old fermentation tanks lying around the yard like beached whales - a run of old cement tanks gracefully crumbling, their moment has passed - and a mobile home as the site’s office and lab. This make sense when you chat to Lionel - there is no grandeur or fuss - his old Peugeot 106 has no rear windscreen! And yet inside the new shell of his winery it is pristine like a laboratory - the small shed is insulated and was operating at 5 degrees when we went in to taste the fresh juice (it was 25 outside!). Furthermore the juice in the tanks was being held at a steady 2 degrees to delay fermentation and allow for some cold stabilising of the solid matter that has got through the press. He keeps this juice cool for 2 or three weeks before allowing the natural yeast to take over and fermentation will begin.

Lionel’s thoughtful approach, clear plan and organised, precise way of working is translated to his wines very clearly. The Sauvignon de Touraine ‘Les Sauterelles’ is a clean-cut, joyous wine that bounces out of the glass with ‘just enough’ exuberance to satisfy all palates. When talking to Lionel it became clear why his wines stand out from the crowd:- he is a very conscientious vigneron, pruning hard and keeping yields low. This attention to detail continues in the cellar, where he works on the lees of the Sauvignon to give the wine a more ample feel and greater length. The result is a wine with superb Sauvignon character, but thanks to the cool terroir here and the careful work - it remains very Loire in feel. A real bargain from this part of the world.
