HASKELL II

2009 Haskell Vineyards

Grapes Cab, Syrah, Mourvèdre
Colour Red
Origin South Africa
ABV 14%

This is a blend of 50% Shiraz, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% of Mourvèdre from the 2010 vintage added to give “another twist” to the blend. It spent 15 months in French oak, 40% new. I noted red and black fruit as well as mocha on the nose and palate. This is a rich, lush, opulent wine with moderate acidity and smooth, soft tannins - yumm - a relative bargain from this top estate. L&S (Oct 2011)

Deep red-ruby. Riper aromas of redcurrant, chocolate, mocha and cinders, plus a hint of flowers. Sweeter, fatter and more open-knit than the 2010, but with no shortage of energy to its dark fruit, pepper and tar flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jun 2015)

Shiraz Cabernet Blend with pronounced ‘blackberry coulis and boysenberry flavours’. Drink now through 2018. 700 cases made. -JM Produced using the alternative approach of co-fermenting 50% of the Shiraz and Cabernet, with 8% of Mourvedre added at the final blending. Rating: 91 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Mar 2014)

Debut 09 from shiraz, cab & mourvédre oozes class. Elegant, sweet, clean lines of ripe juicy black fruit, luscious vanilla tannins & a nutty, creamy finish with a hint of black pepper. Rating: 4½ stars Platter's South African Wine Guide (Nov 2013)

Haskell Vineyards

The Haskell Vineyards estate is in the Helderberg, the revered Stellenbosch sub-region which contains many of South Africa's greatest wine names, the 23 hectares of vineyards neighbouring Rust en Vrede, Stellenzicht and Bilton.

The estate was originally names Dombeya after a wild native pear tree that gows in the area, and this is the name used for the 'Dombeya' range, which is designed to represent great value at its price point and to offer an insight into the capacity of the estate to make stylish wines of individuality.

The founding winemaker, Rianie Strydom, has now handed over the baton to Rudolph Steenkamp, who joined the estate as assistant winemaker and vineyard manager in June 2018. Rudolph has worked for four vintages at Groot Constantia, as well as in France.

Awarded an elite five star rating in the upcoming 2010 John Platter Guide, Haskell also made history by becoming the first South African winery to win Best Red Wine and Best Wine in Show at the prestigious 2009 Tri-Nations Challenge, a yearly competition between the finest wines of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
