This Sangiovese and Syrah (15%) blend from Tuscany's Maremma coastal region, is packed with bright, expressive fruit. With a riper and crisper approach than Chianti or Nobile di Montepulciano this makes for brilliant summer drinking. The 2009 is particularly attractive with an extra dimension of ripe, juicy fruit. With the leaves turning a deep golden color across Europe, thoughts naturally turn to the fireside and hearty, warming reds. This example from the southern coast of Tuscany, near the medieval town of Magliano, is one such wine. Here, the vineyards are 120 meters above sea level and benefit from being near the coast. Ruby red in the glass, this blend of predominantly Sangiovese with a little Syrah, is packed with immediate, easy-drinking appeal. On the nose, it has oodles of bright, red fruit with a luscious sweetness and soft, smooth tannins. An ideal accompaniment to a winter stew, game dishes or served by the glass as an aperitif with a good book in hand. Will Lyons, The Wall Street Journal (Nov 2011)
“It’s really, really good glugging wine,” Patrick Sandeman of Lea and Sandeman puts it, while we taste his excellent Morellino di Scansano “Heba” 2009 from Fattoria di Magliano in the shop in Kensington Church Street. There’s the deep, black cherry nose with just a hint of violets, the open generous fruit, sweetness trouncing the hint of sourness you always get with sangiovese – helped here with 15% syrah. Heba is mainly fermented in cement tanks – coming back into fashion all over the wine world – and not matured in oak. It weighs in at 13 degrees, which is relatively light for morellino these days, but seems about right. The Daily Telegraph, July 2011.Harry Eyres (Jul 2011)
Fattoria di Magliano
Nestled in the hilly Italian countryside of Maremma Toscana with its vineyards descending towards the Tyrrhenian Sea from a height of 300m, The vineyards here offer some of the best views we know of the Tuscan coastline. It is a beautiful and yet still quite a wild place. La Fattoria di Magliano was set up in 1996 by Agostino Lenci. Agostino, fascinated by the history of the region and its centuries old wine-making traditions, sees his job and duty to safeguard nature – both wild and agricultural. Bringing in the expertise of Sassicaia's winemaker Graziana Grassini was a shrewd move and she still oversees the wine-making here with aplomb. Minimum intervention and now completely organic with certification from 2018 onwards, Agostino and his team are making smart and wonderfully characterful wines here from local varieties and some small productions of some very charming Super Tuscans too.
Nearly twenty-five years, on these beautiful vineyards are maturing and producing the best fruit of their lives, vine age and bio-dynamic practices means these wines now really are better than ever since the first harvest in 2003. And we should not forget that even when young these vineyards were producing wonderful fruit - the 2004 Poggio Bestiale was rated Italy's best Tuscan wine under £20 in Decanter magazine – quite an achievement for a wine with such a short history. The soil here is sandy with a good amount of clay, which combined with a good dose of sunshine and sea breeze, results in some really beautiful wines – full-flavoured, ripely rich but with a dynamic twang of acidity and pep that makes them just so drinkable.
