TASSINAIA

2009 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Sangiovese
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14%

This Classic Super Tuscan is still one of our stand-out favourite wines. At this price level it is really a reference point in what is achievable. Very hard to beat for sheer joy in a bottle. The 2009 is made up of 15% Sangiovese, the rest Cabernet and Merlot. Lovely warmth and roundness with a subtle little bitterness on the back which keeps it fresh. Like the Lupicaia, it is fully ripe but still dry and classically Tuscan, harmonious, with a glorious depth of fruit and spice. Drinking range: 2014 - 2022 L&S (May 2014)

Earth, dark-berry and wet-earth aromas and flavors. Some herbs, too. Full-bodied and very ripe, verging on raisins. Chewy tannins. Bark and balsamic undertones. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Better in 2017. Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2015)

Fantastically complex for the price, this is a faithful favourite of L&S and once again shows itself to have a rich tomato purée depth of flavour with perky earthy spice plus it’s relatively smooth in tannin already. Made with Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rating: 92 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2015)

The 2009 Tassinaia is exotic and beguiling from the get-go. Intensely sweet, floral aromatics meld into racy, super-ripe fruit. Opulent and flamboyant to the core, the 2009 is intense, heady and ready to deliver considerable pleasure. Tobacco, hard candy, juniper berries, rose petals, licorice, game and smoke add complexity on the brooding, virile finish. Drinking range: 2017 - 2029 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2015)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
