Good fruit, a freshness that has been missing in many right bank wines this year. Ripe but not jammy. Silky fresh and lifted to the end. Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2010)

(a blend of 65% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvig non, 7% petit verdot and 3% carmenere; aging in 30% new oak) Bright ruby-red. Coolish aromas of raspberry, black cherry and cocoa. Supple, fresh and fruit-driven, with enticing floral lift to the pliant red fruit flavors. Finishes with ripe tannins and a strong suggestion of floral merlot. Ripe but not exaggerated. Rating: 87-89 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2010)

Made by Ausone’s proprietor, Alain Vauthier, this attractive, round, pretty wine is soft and generous, with loads of blueberry and raspberry fruit as well as hints of incense and crushed rock. It should drink well for a decade or more. Rating: 87-89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2010)

A wine from the Vauthier/Ausone stable. This is 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Carmenere. Yield 46 hl/ha. A characterful nose, smoky-meaty, deep with earthy-savoury fruit. A supple character to the fruit on the palate, quite polished, a fairly solid style, with a quite moderate tannic structure, rather subtle acidity as well. Plenty of aromatic interest but I find the palate rather too soft and broad for my liking. Rating: 15-16+ Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2010)

Château Fonbel

Amongst the best value wines in St Emilion is Château Fonbel. It is owned by Alain Vautier, owner of near-by Château Moulin Saint Georges and Château Ausone. The 16ha of vineyard are planted with a slightly atypical mix – there is 70% Merlot, nothing unusual for St Emilion; 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, very high for St Emilion; 7% Petit Verdot, possibly the highest percentage in St Emilion; and 3% Carmenère, possibly the highest percentage in Bordeaux.
