2009 CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE Cuvée de la Reine des Bois Domaine de la Mordorée

2009 CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE Cuvée de la Reine des Bois Domaine de la Mordorée

Grapes: Grenache  Origin: France, Rhône
Lea & Sandeman review
The really remarkable thing about this wine is the way that the tannins are so fine-grained as to be sliding, supple and volume-giving rather than sand-papery. And yet their presence gives a tonic dryness to counter the depth and ripeness of the fruit. Subtle, not a word often associated with Chateauneuf from a top vintage. Gorgeous mouthfilling fruit that just needs to develop from its youthful purity, to expand to the complexity shown in the magificent 2000 tasted alongside it at the recent (Sept 2011) 'Bunch' tasting. Will be a great bottle, and great value.

This is very pure and primal on the nose with scents of blackberry, earth, violets and fennel. It is tight at first, but unwinds nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, superb poise and mineralité with razor-sharp precision on the finish. This is a supremely well-crafted Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Tasted February 2011.   96/100

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois (made from an identical blend with an identical upbringing) is also one of the most impressive efforts of the vintage. However, Christophe Delorme and his brother, Fabrice, have fashioned so many great Reine des Bois, it is difficult to say if it will turn out better than the 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000 or 1998. Among the most concentrated Chateauneufs of the vintage, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as copious aromas of blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice and spring flowers. This full-bodied offering reveals rich, pure fruit notes, a multidimensional mouthfeel and extraordinary elegance and freshness. It is a tour de force achievement that requires 2-4 years of bottle age; it should last for 15-20+ years. Bravo!   93-96

Vivid ruby. Deeply pitched black raspberry, cherry and floral aromas are brightened by notes of Asian spices and minerals. Rich and fleshy but shockingly lithe, offering juicy red and dark berry compote flavors and complicating notes of candied lavender and allspice. Finishes sweet and long, with outstanding clarity and persistence.   94
