(90% grenache and 10% syrah): Full ruby. Heady, seductively perfumed scents of red and dark berries, potpourri and allspice, with notes of minerals and blood orange adding complexity. Smooth, fleshy black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors pick up an exotic Asian spice quality with air and show excellent clarity. Finishes with very good precision and a lingering floral quality. Rating: 93 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2012)

A superstar in 2009 is the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes. A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with the Grenache aged in cement tanks and the Syrah in barriques, this wine has a deep ruby/purple color and a striking nose of black raspberries, black currants, cherries, licorice and spring flowers. It is deep, full-bodied, dense, and one of the most concentrated of the 2009s. A terrific effort in this vintage, it should drink nicely for 15 or more years. Drink 2010-2025 Rating: 92-94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)

Domaine Giraud

Owned by François and Marie Giraud the 19 hectare Domaine Giraud is now rated among the best producers in Châteauneuf du Pape. François is responsible for the vineyards and Marie for the vinification and together with Philippe Cambié, one of the Rhône's most exceptional consultant wine makers, they have come up with a string of excellent vintages. The 19 hectares are split between an 8 hectare plot in the 'Gallimardes' area in the south, which includes parcels of hundred-year old Grenache, and further sites in the Crau, the sandy soils near Château Rayas on the Pignan plateau, and the white rocky soils of the highest points of the appellation, and these too include vines over a hundred years old.
