Arnaldo Caprai's 'entry level' Sagrantino (20%) is rounded out with ripe Sangiovese and by oak ageing, in a combination of used 'barriques' and large Slavonian 'botte'. There is plenty of ripe fruit here, as well as firm tannins, but all nicely polished and sappy, making it a great wine for full on Italian dishes. L&S (Apr 2012)

Montefalco Rosso embodies a great bond between the wine and area of Montefalco. A ruby red wine with sensational intense aromas and notes of ripe red fruit and delicate hints of vanilla. The Montefalco Rosso is mainly made of Sangiovese grapes but also includes a small percentage of Sagrantino grapes, for which the Arnaldo Caprai winery is best known.Winemaker's notes (Feb 2013)

The Caprai winery and vineyards lie on the hillside below the Umbrian hilltop town of Montefalco. Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo-Caprai Caprai, and now in the hands of his son Marco, the estate has become the leading producer of Sagrantino wines in the region. Sagrantino shows no resemblance to any of Italy's other grape varieties, and is almost exclusive to the region of Montefalco - it is thick-skinned, small bunched and small-berried, but big in every other way: colour, tannins, acids, extracts, and sugars.
