CHÂTEAU BERNADOTTE

2010 Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc

Ripe and rounded, fat almost to the point of opulence, certainly well done, there is as ever here a slightly leafy undertow. Rating: 87 L&S (Apr 2011)

The 2010 Bernadotte is relatively subdued on the nose with earthy black fruit laced with smoke and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with rather scrawny tannins, moderate acidity but it is missing some cohesion and flesh towards the finish. A disappointing showing vis-à-vis previous bottles. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 85 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

The 2010 is a solidly made, atypically powerful La Bernadotte from the owners of Pichon-Lalande. It displays notes of white chocolate, cedar, black currants and strong earthy undertones. Medium-bodied and fresh, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years. 2011-2026 Rating: 87-89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)

Tasted at Pichon-Lalande, this property having been acquired by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing in 1997. The harvest was October 2nd to 19th, yield 50 hl/ha, the blend 52.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48.5% Merlot. The pH is 3.62, the IPT 73, and this will see 33% new oak. A dark hue, not so glossy or concentrated as many other wines. Rather a spicy nose, a touch oaky and a little gamey too. The palate seems quite linear and it doesn't have the flesh of some other wines. The fruit has a fresh and lighter red character which does appeal, and with none of the gaminess that the nose suggested. Overall, bright and rather uplifting, full of attractive red fruit with rather chalky tones. Rating: 14.5-15.5/20 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2011)

Château Bernadotte

The 35 hectare estate of Château Bernadotte was built in 1860 and is a Cru Bourgeois estate in the commune of Saint Sauveur, which borders the west side of the Pauillac appellation. It was purchased in 1997 by the second growth Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, subsequently taken over by the Louis Roederer champagne house. Since December 2012, Bernadotte has been owned by the King Power Group of Hong Kong. The estate is densely planted 51 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 9,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The soils are mainly gravelly, sandy with some clay and drain well. Vinification takes place in 23, large, temperature controlled, stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat. The wines of Chateau Bernadotte are aged in 30% new, French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, depending on the quality and character of the vintage with an annual average production of 150,000 bottles. All picking here is done by hand and extraction is light, so the wines are enjoyable relatively young making an outstanding wine of power, minerality and beautifully managed tannins, all supporting concentrated fruit.
