Fresh, round, supple and ripe. No edges. Lovely seamless length retains fruit well, all quite big and warm. Not grand, but very good at its level. Rating: 88 L&S (Apr 2011)

The nose is packed with sweet fruit all feeling ripe. Red fruits are backed by black layers of flavour a good weight of fruit with the sweetness on the mid palate giving suppleness and flesh. The bramble towards the back gives freshness on the finish. 2017-30 Rating: 89-92 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of cassis, licorice, espresso and fresh herbs. Juicy, fine-grained and supple, but in a distinctly cool style for the year, with the greenness carrying through on the palate. Nicely balanced, though, and the smooth tannins will not get in the way of enjoying this wine early. Rating: 87 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2013)

Unusual for having such a large proportion of Carmenère (surely the biggest in Bordeaux), this is remarkably Chilean in character, with the chocolate, mint and green pepper flavours of the (adopted) South American variety. Silky and spicy with well balanced tannins, oak and acidity. 10+ years Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2011)

Château Fonbel

Amongst the best value wines in St Emilion is Château Fonbel. It is owned by Alain Vautier, owner of near-by Château Moulin Saint Georges and Château Ausone. The 16ha of vineyard are planted with a slightly atypical mix – there is 70% Merlot, nothing unusual for St Emilion; 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, very high for St Emilion; 7% Petit Verdot, possibly the highest percentage in St Emilion; and 3% Carmenère, possibly the highest percentage in Bordeaux.
