CHÂTEAU LA TOUR CARNET

2010 4ème Cru Classé Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification 4ème Cru Classé
ABV 13%

Bright, dark red. Sexy aromas of black cherry, blueberry, licorice, menthol and flowers seemed to shut down with aeration. Densely packed and fresh, with sound acidity intensifying the pretty, well-delineated black fruit flavors. The wine's firm spine of tannins and acids is nicely supported by its mid-palate concentration. A very impressive vintage for this bottling, and in need of patience. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2013)

From their 180 acres, this large estate fashioned a blend of 53% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvested over a three week period (September 29 - October 17), it is a big, tannic, nearly over-sized wine boasting a dense purple color along with notes of graphite, blueberries, black raspberries and spring flowers. Great fruit on the attack, a powerful, full-bodied mouthfeel and an unusually masculine, muscular style suggest this 2010 will require patience, but it could turn out to be one of the finest La Tour Carnets ever produced. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2045. Rating: 92-94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jun 2011)

Opaque inky-ruby. Floral, fruity nose offers dark plum, cassis, licorice and tar. Then soft and supple on the palate, with rich flavors of blackcurrant jelly, black cherry syrup, tar, underbrush, and a lingering balsamic coffee note. The satisfying finish shows youthfully chewy tannins and good length. This very promising wine from Bernard Magrez struck me as less oaky and more gently extracted than many of his wines from previous years. Rating: 87-90 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2011)

A blend of 53% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot cropped at 45hl/ha, this has a well defined, rounded bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of ripe figs. Very focused and poised. The palate has a pleasant grippy entry, quite bold tannins but very well balanced and the finish is very focused and Pauillac in style, hints of graphite towards the finish. Very fine. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2011)

Château La Tour Carnet

Chateau La Tour Carnet, owned by Bernard Magrez is one of the oldest Bordeaux wine producers in the appellation. In fact, some parts of the building, specifically the round tower, date all the way back to the 11th Century. The fortress was inhabited by the English as early as the 12th Century. It was an important fort that was used by the military. Originally, it went under the name of Chateau de Saint-Laurent. The land eventually fell to French rule. After centuries of war, the ruined property passed through the hands of a succession of owners, before coming to Thibault de Carmaing in the 16th Century and eventually to Charles de Leutken. The Bordeaux wine estate remained with his descendents. During the 1855 classification, the estate was under the direction of Angélique Raymond. The current owner is Bernard Magrez, who is the proprietor of a number of other Bordeaux estates, most notably Pape Clément in Pessac-Léognan. He also owns Fombrauge in St. Emilon. Chateau La Tour Carnet is one of the top producers in Haut Medoc and lesser appellations area today.
