Basile Tesseron introduces this with the comment that it is 'the best Lafon Rochet ever made', and frankly it is hard to disagree. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot. Dark, with black fruit and graphite density, all stuffed with complex fruit flavour which the fresh acidity fans out on the palate. Rich and classy, and very long, ending on those dry but intense cherry-skin notes. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2011)

The 2010 Lafon-Rochet is noticeably deep in color. It has a vivacious and sophisticated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, wild hedgerow and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with powerful black fruit mixed with black pepper, clove and sage, developing more depth and grip towards the finish with superb persistence and structure. Impressive. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2023)

The 2010 Lafon-Rochet offers ample black and red fruit on the nose, undergrowth and figgy notes developing with aeration, quite open and more expressive than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, good structure, just a touch of piquancy with a very faint metallic note on the finish that will dissipate with time. This is one of the greatest Lafon-Rochet releases in recent years. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

Closed on the nose. Generous and dense on the palate. Caressing but firmly dry at the same time. Just becomes a bit lean on the finish, leaving the mouth pretty dry but should come round. 2017-2027 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2012)

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint Estèphe Quatrième cru 1855 A somewhat complicated history eventually placed the Rochet vineyard - so named due to its rocky soil - into the hands of the Lafon family in the early years of the 17th Century. The family owned the estate until 1895. It passed through several hands until Guy Tesseron, who's family had prospered in the Cognac business, bought the, now run-down, estate in the 1960's. Guy completely renovated Lafon-Rochet, even to the extent of demolishing all of the delapidated buildings and rebuilding a grand 18th Century style chateau, which was painted yellow to match the labels. Thus Lafon-Rochet are almost unique among Haut-Médoc châteaux in being built in the 20th Century. In the 1960's Château Lafon-Rochet's vineyards consisted of just 15ha of Merlot. Today, there are 41ha under vine, and at a more Médoc-like 54% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin spends up to 20 months in wood (50% ish new). Sitting inland from Cos d'Estournel, facing across the Jalle de Brieul at Duhart Milon and Lafite, Lafon-Rochet has some very noble neighbours. The Tesseron family also own Château Pontet-Canet.
