CHÂTEAU LE BOSCQ

2010 Saint Estèphe Château Le Boscq

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe

Starts well with a good compact Cabernet fruit. It is dense. Dry finish - and then the fruit comes back. The flavours continue to evolve over a long period. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2011)

The 2010 Le Boscq is a delightful surprise. It is Merlot-driven on its precocious nose and is Pomerol-like with layers of raspberry confit, crushed strawberry and cedar, with light loamy scents appearing in the background. The palate is ample and rounded, again, almost Right Bank in style, smooth and more like a 2009 stylistically. No hard edges here, this Saint-Estèphe slips down the throat nicely. Enjoy this now and over the next decade. Drinking range: 2022 - 2034 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Full red-ruby. Sexy, slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, game, mocha, coffee and black olive. Sappy and elegant, with flavors of currant, graphite and black olive. This generous wine's youthful baby fat is leavened by very good vinosity. Finishes lively and long, with classy tannins. A serious success in 2010. Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2013)

The Chateau Leboscq has a light but well defined, very pure bouquet of blackberry, cedar and smoke, hints of orange rind developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry, good weight with dense, robust tannins and layers of toasty blackberry and plum towards the finish. Very fine! Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2011)

Château Le Boscq

Château le Boscq sits at the far northern end of Saint Estèphe with it’s fine late 19th Century mansion commanding fine views over the River Gironde, and the southern portions of the vineyard gazing across the Chenal de Calon at Calon-Ségur. Unusually for this part of the Haut-Médoc, the majority of Le Boscq’s vineyard – 60% - is planted with Merlot which accounts for a rounder fleshier style to the wine.

Of note, historically, is that the Barton family owned Château le Boscq before they moved south to Léoville and Langoa in Saint Julien. Since 1995, le Boscq has been in the ownership of Bordeaux négociant and merchant Dourthe.

It was classified ‘Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel’, in the 2020 Cru Bourgeois Classification for Médoc wines. The property has already been awarded HVE level 3 (High Environmental Value), and is working toward organic certification.
