CHÂTEAU TALBOT

2010 4ème Cru Classé Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification 4ème Cru Classé
ABV 14%

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Blue-edged purple, fresh and juicy nose, blackberry and blackberry leaf, supple attack, almost so round as to be blunt, but then the tannins kick in and it shows the power. This is a very attractive Talbot which has more ripeness and density. There's decent volume and considerable drive and freshness. Jean-Pierre Marty told us that they had 30% less Merlot than in 2009, but that it was all very good and in the first wine, but that the lower yields in general mean that they have 8% less in total on the estate than last year, and 12-13% less in the Grand Vin. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2011)

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. First bottle TCA. Second bottle: deeper colour and generally a more youthful aspect than the 2009. Dense, firm and restrained with a dark-fruit nuance. Solid tannic frame but no aggression, the tannins fine and backed by generous fruit. More freshness than the 2009 and overall better balance. Built for the long haul. (JL) 13.5% Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 17+ James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2022)

The 2010 Talbot is much more backward on the nose compared to its peers, eventually revealing blackberry, briary and light floral scents, pretty but clearly requiring more bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins. Cedar and graphite lend this a slight Pauillac-like personality, linear and correct with modest depth on the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

Good dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, tobacco, mocha and smoke. Rich, plush and full in the mouth, but with edgy acidity and a peppery note contributing definition to the raspberry and mineral flavors. Not hugely concentrated but juicy, fine-grained and firmly structured wine with excellent balance. A worthy successor to the very good 2009 release, and even fresher and cleaner. Based on these two vintages, Talbot seems back on track. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2013)

Château Talbot

St Julien Quatrième cru 1855

John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury was sent by King Henry VI to re-impose some English rule on this troublesome part of his Kingdom, but ended up being killed at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Quite what connection he had with this particular bit of St Julien is unknown but, at least as far back as the 17th Century, the large estate in the centre of the appellation has been known as Château Talbot and it has generally been held that it was named for said John Talbot.

Désiré Cordier bought Talbot in 1917 and it is still in the hands of the Cordier family.

Sitting right in the middle of St Julien, surrounded by the great names of the appellation, and at 107ha of vineyard, Château Talbot is hard to miss. The vineyards are planted to 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Fermentation takes place in a combination of traditional wooden vats and modern stainless steel, with the Grand Vin spending 14 months in oak (50%-60% new).

There is a second wine named in honour of John Talbot, who's local title was Connétable Talbot.

With such big production and with an easy name to read and remember in the English-speaking market, Château Talbot has a healthy following and reliable reputation. It is a reputation that Talbot, by and large, lives up to with well-flavoured structured wines.
