Jean-Marie Royer was thrilled to be able to do a deal to get his hands on this parcel of vines on the sand of the part of Chateauneuf called la Crau, the same terroir as Rayas. he is looking for the supremely elegant expression of Grenache this this terroir can produce. Supple, silk-velvet purity, some dusty points of subtle dryness, powerful, already complex, the fruit dominating any hint of oak (it is aged in second-hand demi-muids he gets from Domaine Liger-Belair in Burgundy). Fabulous and very rare (UK allocation 36 bots!). L&S (May 2012)

A new cuvee, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sables de la Crau comes from a parcel that was recently acquired. It is a 100% old vine Grenache aged in demi-muids. (Demi-muids are 600-liter barrels, as compared to the usual small barriques, which are 225-liter, or the much larger foudres, which can range dramatically in size.) Deep ruby, with an exotic, almost kinky, super-ripe nose of kirsch and strawberry jam intermixed with seaweed, licorice, and earthy undertones, the wine has exceptional concentration, a full-bodied texture, and a layered mouthfeel. It is another terrific example of old vine Grenache that is enormously satisfying and potentially very complex. It should evolve for 12-15+ years. Drink: 2011 - 2026 Rating: 91-94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2012)

Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
