Produced from only 28hl/ha. From barrel it was much finer than the domaine's 'vergelesses' cuvee, with much more fruit depth. Minerals coat the tongue, fine and saline, very grown up and very long. At our tasting in January it seemed darker in colour and fuller bodied, but significantly denser and more closed. Either way the promise is there. L&S (Jan 2012)

(a mix of vine ages though the oldest date from 1938). An intensely floral nose offers up notes of rose petal, violet and lavender that add elegance to the otherwise ripe and solidly complex blend of plum and wild red berry fruit scents. The refined, pure and strongly mineral-inflected flavors possess so much energy that they seem to vibrate in the mouth and this sense of tension makes for a wonderfully refreshing and sophisticated mouth feel. As if this wasn’t enough there is also impeccable balance and a real sense of harmony. In sum, this mildly austere effort is a Zenlike wine that should age brilliantly. 2020+ Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2012)

Bright red. Pure but subdued aromas of redcurrant, cherry and smoke. Dense, broad and quite dry, with strong minerality currently dominating red fruits. Suppler in the middle than the Les Vergelesses but also more tannic, showing a hint of crushed stone bitterness on the finish. Serious wine but still an infant. Rating: 89 - 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2012)

Blueish raspberry red. Light, earthy nose. Lots of crisp fruit. Crystalline. Very light but pure. Will always be, ahem, delicate. 2016-2021 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2012)

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

One of the great family domaines of the Côte d'Or, housed in the remarkable manor house at Savigny, with excellent holdings in Savigny itself and in neighbouring Pernand and on the hill of Corton. Organic since 1988 and, now, biodynamic (fully certified by Demeter and Ecocert). It is run by brother and sister François and Claude de Nicolaÿ. As François explains, they do not make 'bêtes de concours' or competition wines, but ones you drink. They have over the last few years progressed the renewal of the barrels of the domaine - there is still very little actual new wood, 5% new wood on the premiers crus, and 10% on the Grands crus, but they have replaced the oldest barrels which they have come to understand did have an effect of closing the wines down.
