A Siemens 2010 Serriger Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese feinherb emphasizes the nutty richness that is incipient in a number of wines in the present collection, here in the form of almond and hazelnut supported by a subtly creamy texture and lent counterpoint by peach kernel and crushed stone. Lily-of-the-valley and orange blossom add aromatic allure – even inner-mouth – and the stone-licking; flower-chomping; succulently peachy; salt-tinged; and piquantly nutty finish here is seductively persistent. Just as Siemens’ 1999s display greater sense of clarity today than in their youth, he thinks the 2010s will follow a similar course. Certainly, though, one can anticipate at least the better part of a decade’s pleasure in this Spatlese’s company. Rating: 92 David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate (Nov 2014)

Weingut Dr Siemens

The two vineyards that make up this estate, Würtzberg and Herrenberg, are steeply-sloped (up to eighty degrees) on the banks of the Saar, and are the most southerly vineyards on the river. Because of the slope, the highest vines of the estate are six hundred feet above the lowest.
Herrenberg, with its blue slate, makes the most linear and elegant wines, while the redder slate of Würtzberg makes for a slightly fuller, and, as the name suggests, spicier style. The vineyard was originally planted only as recently as 1898, having prevously been planted with oak which supplied the bark for tanning industry. The Schorlemmer family who owned it built a two-storey winery in which, as to the present time, the wines are moved only by gravity.
In the 1960s Bert Simon bought the vineyards and then the winery, which he operated until it was bought by the new owners in 2006. In 1986 Simon pioneered the planting of Pinot Noir in some of the warmest parts of the vineyard. Doctors Jochen and Karen Siemens, the current owners, invested substantially to bring the winery up to state of the art, and this is an estate whose star is rising.
