As so often a distinct greenish cast to the colour. Lively sappy mineral flavours. All of a piece, acidity well-covered, very directed. A purposeful 'knows where it is going' feel. Nearly painful... I want to swallow so badly as it is just so mouthwatering. Another great Clos des Mouches. L&S (Nov 2011)

Full yellow with a gold tinge. Sexy aromas of stone fruits, quince, white truffle and porcini are a bit more evolved than they should be. Quite ripe and silky but ultimately a bit lacking in clarity and lift, not to mention minerality, with quince, apricot and truffle flavors dominating. Not especially complex but not simple either. This wine was very impressive in the early going--even a bit reduced--but is evolving quickly, or at least this bottle is. Probably best to enjoy now or over the next five years. Véronique Drouhin suggests pairing it with poulet à la crème et champignons. (43 h/h; 3.26 pH; 4.4 g/l acidity; some of this fruit featured a bit of botrytis, which may have also concentrated its acidity) Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 89 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Feb 2019)

While it is true that every wine had its fans, our top three 2010s ran away from the pack. In our opinion, Drouhin's Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc is underrated in the hierarchy of white Burgundies. This tasting supported that view as the wine ended up in the winner's circle... Bright yellow-green color. Wood in the nose, with leafy complexity and an attractive peach scent. This wine's aromas continue to improve with aeration. Tight yet weighty in the mouth. Flavors recall lime custard, smoky tobacco, minerals and a hint of petrol. It's quite expressive and rich, with excellent penetration. There is a wonderful slightly bitter fruit pit finish. Wine #4 is still young and needs to develop. That said, it was showing enough tonight to finish first in the voting. For the record, this wine always shows fabulously in EWS blind tastings. Rating: 96+ Howard Kaplan, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Aug 2014)

The 2010 Beaune Clos des Mouches, one of the Drouhin's flagships, is impossibly young. It needs several years, at a minimum, to shed some of its baby fat. Clos des Mouches has a great track record of aging, and while I rarely take the risk of cellaring white Burgundy these days, if I were to cellar a handful of 2010 whites, Clos des Mouches would be one of my choices. Today, it is the wine's exceptional textural elegance and precise, saline minerality that make the deepest impression. Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2013)

Domaine Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
