2010 Puisseguin Saint Emilion

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Puisseguin Saint Emilion
ABV 14%

Big, smokey fruit, quite intense but round and full of a cool lushness. A lot more precision than many of the slightly soupy-hot St Emilions. Long, long briary blackberry flavours. Has direction. Rating: 91+ L&S (Apr 2011)

A right-bank name which does not show the traditionally aromatic and creamy character so typical of the area but which is more in the style of this year's left-bank labels. The truth is that Pierre Taix did vinify it Medoc style, with little extraction, no bleeding of the vats and 15% of press wine already added to the blend at the en primeur. The result is splendid! Brightly intense purplish crimson. Fresh, clean nose of fruit without the creamy character -but still hedonistic. Superbly voluptuous and broad entry. The wine then reveals layers of aromas, generous fat and a wonderfully vibrant expression of fruit. Its mid-palate is well-built, rich and powerful. Tasty long finish. The best I have known for the estate. Thank-you Monsieur Taix for this terrific wine. Alcohol content : 14°2 - pH level : 3.55 - Yield : 35hl/ha, as for a grand cru - A blend of 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Rating: 16.5 - 16.75 Jean-Marc Quarin (Apr 2011)

Very attractive lift and freshness. Racy and readable and a very nice take on this vintage. Even if not for the very long term. 2014-2022 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2011)

A bit hollow in the mid palate but some very pretty plum and berry character. Full and chewy. Plenty going on. Rating: 89-90 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2011)

La Mauriane

La Mauriane is a small vineyard within Château Rigaud, a Puisseguin-St-Emilion property owned by Pierre Taïx, who owns a few other properties in Puisseguin and the neighbouring Côtes de Castillon. La Mauriane is a micro-cuvée, made by Pierre, who is a university lecturer (economics) in his other life. One of the three parcels that make this extraordinary wine consists of eighty year old vines planted by his grandfather. The vineyard here is farmed organically. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
