Lea & Sandeman review
Fié Gris (otherwise known as Sauvignon Gris) is an ancient Loire variety which had all but disappeared before young Eric Chevalier was asked to make a special Cuvée for the renowned Hotel Anne de Bretagne, and this is where we first tasted his wine. Eric tells us that the grapes look more like Gewürztraminer, larger than Sauvignon with a distinctive yellow bloom. Made with the greatest of care (and minimum of intervention in the vineyard) the pressed juice is left on the skins and pulp for an extended period, and the fermented wine remains on the 'lees' through until January. At every stage the wine is free-run, with no pumping, and bottled after Easter. Rather more restrained on the nose this vintage, but with explosive fruit on the palate, and an attack of bright, sweet fruit followed by focused acidity.Other reviews and comments
Made from the unusual Sauvignon Gris grape, whose pungent green pea and asparagus aromas are reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, as is the ripe, juicy fresh green herbal fruits character and sharp blade of acidity, but this Loire Valley meets New Zealand style from Eric Chevalier is at the same time exotically, spicily, different.

This unusual grape variety (aka Sauvignon Gris) is rarely seen, but going by this example you wonder why. Gooseberry fruit with hints of pine, oyster shell and smoke. Medium bodied and ever so slightly musky on the palate. Well balanced with a fresh finish. This has lots of interest and complexity, worth a try.

Sancerre-Pouilly Loire France
"A full flavoured muscular wine from classic 'silex' (silica) soils, not as overtly Sauvignony as those grown on the chalk soils to the west, nor as firmly dry as the wines from the limestone of Bué. A perfect balance of fruit and firm minerality. This wine is composed of vines with an average age of 30-35 years. Thanks to a diversity of soils types, principally flint and limestone and a strict blending of wines from 28 plots, which adds finesse, aromatic..." (more info)

2011 RIPPON Sauvignon Blanc
Central Otago South Island New Zealand
"What sets this wine apart from the ever increasing number of Sauvignons is the fabulous balance of ripeness, texture and minerality. 40% of the blend was fermented in old French barrels, not for the oak, but for the form of the vessel itself. We think that this is quite the best vintage of Nick's Sauvignon that we have tasted. It is a mindblowing Sauvignon with fabulous fruit and awesome length, which is more in line with a Chablis than a tropical..." (more info)
