MALBEC
Everyone's favourite grape variety, these days, seems to be Malbec. It's easy to see why, especially as the Argentinians have crafted a bright bold and flavoursome style out of the grape variety that Bordeaux forgot. In this case you will find a very typical Mendoza Malbec, a chunky Malbec Cabernet blend from master wine maker Nicolas Catena aswell as his more subtle take on pure Malbec. Whilst Bordeaux may have (mostly) cast off Malbec, it still hangs on in the Cahors region of South West France where Pascal Verhaeghe makes some cracking examples, here also included.
South West France
"Made by the maverick team at Chateau du Cedre - this is made from grapes they buy in rather than grow themselves - 90% Malbec (also known as Cot or Auxerrois) and 10% Merlot. Deep and dark with a big smooth density and good black berry fruit character. "
Mendoza Argentina
"Blend of Malbec, with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% each of Syrah and Petit Verdot, 60% of which is aged eleven months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new. Thick and richly textured with volumous fruit yet very drinkable and cool on the finish."
