AEON

2011 Syrah Haskell Vineyards

Grapes Syrah, Mourvèdre
Colour Red
Origin South Africa
ABV 14%

There is something very sophisticated about all of Rianie's wines, even this brooding Syrah from the Aeon vineyard. An intense middle of dark, well-baked plum fruit is lifted and sharpened up by super scents of wood-spice, some clove and a fine line of something brighter - something more lifted on the red-fruit spectrum. Intense and dark, yet remarkably gentle with it, it carries itself so well. This is serious wine-making from a great estate - a real pleasure to drink. L&S (Oct 2016)

The star of [the tasting] was Aeon, a Syrah with a dribble of Mourvèdre embedded in its core. This is a measured wine with equal parts brutish warrior and debonair charmer. Deep and dark, bristling with power throughout, this wine is encased in the most genial and suave exterior which hints at menace but never frightens the palate. When you dive in you are treated to a sensory explosion which will leave you blushing with excitement.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Oct 2016)

Sweetness and cocoa on the nose. More savoury and finer than many but still lacks a bit of grunt. Drinking range: 2017 - 2021 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sept 2016)

(blended with 5% Mourvedre): Bright red-ruby. Musky, smoky aromas of dark cherry, black pepper and flint. On the palate, black cherry and spice flavors are lifted by pepper and floral nuances. Plush, ripe and smooth, showing a distinctly smoky quality. This sweet, concentrated wine finishes with very suave tannins and lovely peppery length. Should be long-lived. Haskell Vineyards

The Haskell Vineyards estate is in the Helderberg, the revered Stellenbosch sub-region which contains many of South Africa's greatest wine names, the 23 hectares of vineyards neighbouring Rust en Vrede, Stellenzicht and Bilton.

The estate was originally names Dombeya after a wild native pear tree that gows in the area, and this is the name used for the 'Dombeya' range, which is designed to represent great value at its price point and to offer an insight into the capacity of the estate to make stylish wines of individuality.

The founding winemaker, Rianie Strydom, has now handed over the baton to Rudolph Steenkamp, who joined the estate as assistant winemaker and vineyard manager in June 2018. Rudolph has worked for four vintages at Groot Constantia, as well as in France.

Awarded an elite five star rating in the upcoming 2010 John Platter Guide, Haskell also made history by becoming the first South African winery to win Best Red Wine and Best Wine in Show at the prestigious 2009 Tri-Nations Challenge, a yearly competition between the finest wines of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
