Quite a restrained nose, crushed blackberry, and crushed rocks too. Very dry, lean, mid-weight texture. Classical dark ripe black berry flavours in a fine-tannined mass. There's alcohol on the finish, but lots of fruit with it too. Drinking range: 2015 - 2030 Rating: 93 L&S (Mar 2015)

The 2011 Alión...is an exuberant, ripe Alión, with hedonist's aromas that jump out of the glass. Winemaker Javier Ausas tells me he likes the wines when they are young and showy like this one. It is indeed a showy vintage, with aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff of malt whisky...even though this has plenty of stuffing to age I'd drink it young in its exuberant phase. Alion is Vega Sicilia's property in Ribera del Duero, planted exclusively with Tempranillo Tinto Fino. The idea here is to make more modern styled wines, exclusively from tinto fino, which would be radically different to the more traditional style of Vega Sicilia.
