AMARONE CLASSICO

2011 La Marega Le Salette

Colour Red
Origin Italy, Veneto
Sub-district Amarone Classico
ABV 15%

La Salette is one of the leading producers in Valpolicella. Each wine from the Le Salette stable comes from a specific vineyard plot. Winemaker and proprietor Franco Scamperle is adamant that each wine must be allowed to express the character of the soil where the grapes were grown. In the vineyard the classic Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes are grown, and more unusually (and totally legally) some Sangiovese, Barbera, Teroldego, Cabernet and a few others. Up to 15% of these varieties can go into most blends in Valpolicella, and in the case of Le Salette help to produce a unique style of wine. The La Marega Amarone is made every year in greater or lesser quantities. It is dried for a month less and aged in large Slovenian oak barrels, with only about 40% in barrique. L&S (Nov 2014)

The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico La Marega impresses for its sheer depth and weight. The bouquet peels off to reveal dark fruit, spice, leather, cured meat, tar and balsam herb. The wine shows a soft, yielding texture with a full load of juicy concentration. You can drink Amarone La Marega now or allow it to age further. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 91 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Dec 2014)

Floral aromas are layered with notes of ripe black cherry, crushed blackberry, baking spices and a whiff of resin. Despite its full-bodied structure, this is one of the more elegant 2011 Amarones out there, delivering ripe black plum, cocoa and exotic spice. It’s already accessible thanks to polished tannins. The vineyard has grown slowly and carefully, always respecting the local technique which is sensitive to nature and has followed nature's rhythm to bring out the originality and characteristics of the grapes. Le Salette, has never stopped developing their product, basing the essence of their life and activity, their unflagging quest, on patient research. And their goal has always been quality.
