Nose of wild berries and cassis. Palate carries a wild, structured brambly sweetness. Very delicate and nuanced alongside the hardening tannins which remain all through. Thibault finds a 'fraicheur mentholée', which did not really show quite like that for me - needs a bit more time in barrel - which it will get. All there in the length. L&S (Nov 2012)

Bright, full red. Very closed nose hints at tobacco and pepper, plus a whiff of horseradish. Then surprisingly fruity, spicy and suave if a bit lacking in flesh, with the peppery quality carrying through in the middle palate. Finishes with subtle truffley earth tones and very good energy and lift. This needs time to express itself. Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2014)
Bright, dark red-ruby. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, licorice and wild herbs, along with a smoky carbon suggestion. Densely packed and highly concentrated, with a firm tannic spine giving shape and definition to the fresh dark berry flavors. Plenty of stuffing here for balance but this very closed wine will probably need up to a decade of bottle aging to blossom. Rating: 92-94 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Feb 2013)
(from a .72 ha parcel on the Vosne side near the top). Here the nose is somewhat curious as it’s mildly lactic in character, which is very probably due to the late malo. There is superb power and richness to the very solidly structured big-bodied flavors that possess outstanding volume before terminating in an explosively long and quite intensely austere finish that delivers amazing length. This is on the disjointed side today but the significant potential is undeniable. Note that my predicted range assumes that the nose will clear up once it’s properly racked and aerated. 2026+ Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2013)
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
