80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from gravel. 30% new wood like the Saintem. A lighter wine than its more characterful stablemate Montlandrie, but with an attractive sense of movement in the mid-palate. Comes across as being more Merlot in style than the blend would suggest. The 2011 La Chenade offers straightforward earthy red fruit on the nose, clove and black tea coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, fine acidity, pretty and livelier than its peers towards the savoury/dried blood finish. Not bad, but drink soon. Good full ruby. Highly nuanced nose combines red cherry, strawberry, flowers and fresh herbs, complicated by sexy oak spices. In the mouth, almost liqueur-like cherry, dark berry, licorice and mint flavors offer good concentration and a suave texture. Finishes with sweet tannins and a lingering floral quality.
