Nose is not so much beeswax as a faint hint of beeswax polish on old furniture warmed by the sun in a window - a sort of inner glow. Dry and precise, mineral and lifted despite the considerable weight. Long and long and long too. Terrific example of a great wine. L&S (Jan 2013)

The 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru corresponds to the bottle tasted four years earlier. Again, it's pretty reticent at first, toying with you and opening with linden and marine scents, though not furnishing the drinker with the full complement of aromas a Montrachet can deliver. The palate is well-balanced, a little waxy in texture and poised with an unexpected quasi-Sémillon finish. A quirky Montrachet... But that's not written pejoratively. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2024)

The 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru looks a little deeper than the 2016. It has a more conservative bouquet, quite tight at first and then opening to reveal lime flower and a slight algae-like scent. The palate is well balanced and slightly honeyed in style, developing a waxy texture with aeration. Perhaps the 2016 has more length by comparison, although I am taken by the chiseled, almost Sémillon-inspired finish. I am not quite as enthusiastic as I was back in 2015 when I last tasted this, but there is clearly tons of potential here. Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London. Drinking range: 2022 - 2055 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2020)

Drouhin's 2011 Montrachet comes across as quite closed down and disjointed in this stage. The overall impression is a wine that isn't quite fully formed just yet. There is good persistence, especially on the finish, but the 2011 doesn't appear in any mood to show off the full breadth of its personality. Drinking range: 2016 - 2016 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Sept 2013)

Joseph Drouhin

Despite the size of their vineyard holding, not all Drouhin's wines come from their own domaine, but most of the other wines do come from long-term contracts, such as exists with the Marquis de Laguiche wines. In all but name these wines are 'Domaine' wines, and the vineyards are cared for and the wines vinified with exactly the same care.
