At first difficult to 'find', the nose is pure and lifted, if not the biggest, it has a regal quality of vinosity and 'tonicity' - very much its own thing. Although in some ways fantastically unobvious, I have no doubt whatever that this will be great. Fantastic finish. L&S (Nov 2012)

Deep medium red. Deeply pitched aromas of dark berries and cinnamon. Dense and superconcentrated but extremely backward today, hinting at both superripe dark fruits and pimiento. Best today on the very long, building, sappy finish, where the strong spice element dominates. This, too, is extremely backward and will need a good decade in the cellar to put on weight. Rating: 93 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2014)

Deep, bright red with a hint of ruby. Very fresh, pure aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cassis, minerals and flowers. Combines outstanding density with nearly brutal medicinal reserve: if the Clos Vougeot is a baby, this is a fetus. Incredibly tangy wine with outstanding intensity and energy. Expands dramatically on the sappy, chewy back half, spreading out horizontally to coat the palate with leaving any impression of weight. With its ripe, chewy tannins and powerful crushed stone character, this really leaves the taste buds humming. Rating: 93-96 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Feb 2013)

Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
