Quite different on the nose after the young vines. Nost so much fruit as liquorice, spice, woody balsamic notes. It has that quality of being 'other', transcending it's Pinot-ness to express it's 'place' or terroir. "When I taste it I see the roots of the vines going staight down, because it is so straight, so mineral", says Marie-Christine. L&S (Dec 2012)

The 2011 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a great wine for the vintage though, possibly predestined to be compared with the otherworldly 2012. It delivers those crystalline crushed strawberry and blueberry notes on the nose, not a million miles away from Bonnes-Mares in style. The palate does not possess the depth or grip of the 2012 or 2014 yet it has a satin-like texture, pitch-perfect acidity and fine tannins that frame an expressive finish. Excellent. Tasted blind in Burgundy. Drinking range: 2020 - 2042 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2018)

Red cherry, spicecake and dried flowers all lift from the glass in the 2011 Ruchottes-Chambertin. Pointed and beautifully articulated throughout, the 2011 is endowed with terrific energy and class. The Ruchottes has a level of poise and vibrancy the young vines Gevrey doesn't have. The Ruchottes is floral, silky and very pretty. 2021-2036 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

(aged in 70% new oak; the last vintage made entirely with old vines): Bright medium red. Lively aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, cherry, spices and rose petal. Two steps up in texture and intensity from the young-vines version (i.e., the Gevrey Premier Cru), showing a refined, silky texture to the crunchy flavors of pomegranate, flowers and spices. Consistent from start to long, supple, palate-coating finish. This lovely wine boasts considerable early appeal but has the balance and density to age gracefully for at least 10 or 15 years. Rating: 94 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2014)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
