SCRIO

2011 Le Macchiole

Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Maremma
ABV 14%

The 2011 Scrio (100% Syrah) is the vintage darling. The wine boasts abundant varietal character with black fruit and Morello cherry in center stage. Asian spice and barbecue smoke round off the edges and the wine delivers a lavish dose of crushed stone, soda, blue flower and smoked bacon as well. It stands tall with wide shoulders supported by finely etched tannins, thick concentration and a bright spot of acidity on the long finish. Drinking range: 2016 - 2026 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2015)

A structured red with dried-berry, cocoa-powder and coffee character. Full body, chewy tannins and a long, intense finish. Super tannins and fruit. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2014)

Readers who haven't tasted Scrio in a few vintages will be taken aback by the 2011. Once an inky, super-concentrated wine, today's Scrio is all about finesse. Crushed flowers, rose petals, sweet red berries and mint are some of the many notes that blossom in a wine built on nuance and varietal expression. Hints of black pepper, game, lavender, menthol and smoke develop in the glass, adding further layers of complexity. Cool-climate aromatics meet the pure power and breadth of Bolgheri in an utterly compelling Syrah with a bright future. Of all the Macchiole's wines, Scrio is the one wine that has changed the most in recent years. The 2011 represents a move in a very different direction. It will be interesting to see where that road leads. Drinking range: 2017 - 2031 Rating: 95+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Sept 2014)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
