Tasted, somewhat to our surprise, at Talbot. Surprise because last year's story was that Alfred Tesseron's Pontet Canet team were now looking after the vineyard, but actually the owner was Lorraine Cordier, who also co-owned Talbot with her sister Nancy, so there is a reason. Lorraine died in 2011, leaving the estate to her nephews Nancy's children). 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. This is a joy to taste, lovely nose of ripe, slightly fruitcakey juice, sweet and pure, a round easy style with very nice length. Recommended if the price is sensible, more fun than most wines at this level. Rating: 88 L&S (Apr 2012)

Saturated medium ruby. Delicate aromatic aromas of fresh herbs, red berries and orange rind. Light and lively on the palate, with fresh red berry and mineral tones carrying through to the bright finish. An understated, nicely balanced example of Bordeaux, though I doubt it will make old bones. Rating: 85-88 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2012)

The Sénéjac has an attractive nose of bright red fruit with well integrated oak that remains in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with rather sharp tannins. Crisp acidity and it comes across as a little pinched towards the finish. Rating: 85-87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

A clean, rich, savoury aromatic fruit profile here, with rich black cherry fruit. The palate is clean, bright and promising. The fruit seems well defined, the texture of the palate appropriate and well matched by the tannins sitting behind it all. There is also a fresh seam of defining acidity. This is an attractive wine which already displays a great deal of harmony. And on the finish, there is a flourish of tannin and fruit. Good effort. Château Sénéjac

So far south in the Haut-Médoc that it exists in splendid isolation, without vineyard neighbours, in the tiny settlement of Le Pian Médoc, is Château Sénéjac. The usual Bordelais long complicated history is crowned by the purchase of Sénéjac in 1999 by Lorraine Cordier, owner of Château Talbot. Since Lorraine’s death, Sénéjac has been managed by her sister Nancy Bignon Cordier with operations overseen by Alfred Tesseron and his team from Château Pontet Canet. There are 39ha of vineyard, in a single block, planted with 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, with an average age of 35 years. The wines of Château Sénéjac offer splendid value and relatively early appeal.
