CONDRIEU

2011 l'Octroi Domaine Pierre Gaillard

Grapes Viognier

Origin France, Rhône
District Northern Rhône
Village Condrieu
ABV 12.5%

From a one hectare parcel of vines worked biodynamically this wine has a wonderful expression of minerality and focussed fruit. It is immensely concentrated, yet without being anything other than totally charming, voluptuous even and very, very drinkable. Notes of dry peach stones, sweet flowers and bright acidity with tremendous length, this is glorious now and will will probably be something magical with a decade in bottle. Exceptional. Light yellow. An explosively perfumed bouquet evokes lemon curd, poached pear, truffle and iodine, with a bright mineral overtone. Juicy, penetrating and deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors show power and focus, with a nervy mineral quality adding lift and spine. Becomes richer with air, picking up a honeydew note that carries through the long, clinging finish Rating: 92 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Feb 2015)

The mix of yellow peach and apricot is sweet a lovely richness on the nose and depth on the palate. There are fresh fruits in evidence a hint of lime a touch of greengage and this gives a lighter feel to the mid palate but back palate and finish are packed with the richness of sweet ripe apricot and fleshy peach. 2014-2022 (Nov 2013) Rating: 93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Nov 2013)

Domaine Pierre Gaillard

Pierre Gaillard's passion for wine-making developed at an early age when he was discovered ploughing in the vineyard with a plough horse when only twelve years old. After studying oenology at Montpelier he went on to work for a large estate in Côte Rôtie where he steeped himself in the 'terroirs' and traditions of this famous vineyard. In 1981 he bought his own vines in St Joseph and revived the 'Clos de Cuminaille', an ancient vineyard dating back to Roman times. Since then he has bought vines in both Côte Rôtie and Condrieu.
