Oooh this is a bit of a whopper at 15% alcohol and while we're not fans of the headbanging tendency in wine, this big-boned, firm, richly fruited and spicy Grenache/Syrah blend with its peppery undertones manages to keep its head below the parapet thanks to its backbone of chunky tannins and acidity. Not for wimps, mind, so clearly not for breakfast. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2014)

Inky ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the fragrant, spice-accented nose. Shows bright red fruit character on the palate, with notes of candied lavender and spicecake adding complexity. Dusty tannins give shape to the finish, which clings with excellent fruity persistence. Rating: 91 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2014)

A classic, traditional effort that’s loaded with southern Rhone flare, the 2011 Gigondas gives up loads of peppery, underbrush and herbs meat-like qualities as well as a core of sweet, dark fruit. Building in richness in the glass, with medium-bodied depth and texture, as well as a tinge of the savory tannin that’s common in the vintage, it can be consumed now or anytime over the coming 7-8 years. Domaine la Bouïssière

Thierry and Gilles Faravel's Domaine la Bouïssière in Gigondas is exceptional in many ways, apart from the personality of Thierry himself, it is the site of the vineyard, high up under the 'Dentelles de Montmirail' which makes the defining difference.

In contrast to the vines being baked on the plains of stones at the foot of the hill, the Bouïssière vines benefit from cooling air at night falling from the high peaks, and the wines retain a freshness and subtle persistence which is very different to the sometimes bludgeoning broadness and alcoholic heat of the wines on the plain.

Gilles and Thierry Faravel employ non-interventionalist practices to make wines as naturally as possible, resulting in wines of immense concentration and depth, with true vibrancy and the capacity to age for ten to fifteen years.
