The basis of this wine is the quality of the grape from which it is made. No vines under 50 years old are used. Vineyard areas that transmit freshness and delicacy have also been sought. After fermentation at a controlled temperature to avoid losing the primary aromas that define the mencía wines of the Ribeira Sacra, where the mencía reaches its maximum expressiveness and freshness, malolactic fermentation takes place for four months in French and American oak barrels to round off the wine without losing its typical fruitiness. This provides a balanced, well assembled wine in which the wood is scarcely noticed, resulting in a fresh, fruity and appetising wine. Winemaker's notes (Sept 2014)

Adega Pena das Donas
The Ribera Sacra is an ancient land of valleys and monasteries, but the DO was only created in 1996, and this is the only Galician region which specialises in red wines, notably from the Mencia grape, as well as making beautifully crafted whites from Godello. Pena das Donas is a relatively new estate, although the five hectares of vineyards they have acquired on the incredibly steep, terraced banks of the meandering River Sil are between eighty and one hundred years old. These are among the best Godello and Mencia wines we have tasted, so pure and precise in their execution, making them truly world class.
