2012 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification 1er Grand Cru Classé
ABV 14%

Completely inky purple-edged black. Expressive nose of ripe black fruit, and there's real lift on the mid-palate too, almost a surprise but a welcome one. Very rich and dark and palate coating. Impressive and should train on well. Rating: 92++? L&S (Apr 2013)

The 2012 Beauséjour-Bécot has an intriguing nose, quite concentrated with maybe a little New World, yet attractive with red fruit, cough candy, fig and black honey aromas. A touch of VA here? The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe with a smooth texture. It just feels a little over-extracted on the finish at the expense of tension and freshness, a shame as it would otherwise merit a higher score. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2022)

The 2012 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 9 and 18 October. This has a rich and quite decadent bouquet compared to other vintages: copious red cherry and wild strawberry fruit mixed with blueberry and maybe just a touch of VA. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, sweet and generous in the mouth with touches of fig and damson jam towards the finish. It is a lovely, caressing Beau-Séjour Bécot although perhaps I might have picked this just a little earlier? Tasted at the château. Drinking range: 2018 - 2038 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2018)

A blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Beausejour Becot has a vibrant, brightness on the nose. The palate is packed full of lush ripe red berry fruit – quite lavish and exotic for the vintage with a “furry”, sexy finish. Modern in style, this is an opulent Beausejour Becot that should be approachable after bottling, but age well. Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2013)

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Château Beau Séjour Bécot sits on the slopes above Château Angelus, half a mile west of the town of St Emilion. It was once part of a larger Château Beauséjour estate which was owned by the de Carle family who owned Château Figeac. After a couple of changes of ownership, the estate was divided in 1869 between the children of Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe - his daughter's share became Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse, whilst his son's, eventually, became Château Beau Séjour Bécot. The Bécot part of the name only became attached in 1969 when Michel Bécot bought the estate, and the Bécot family own it to this day. The controversial addition to Beau Séjour Bécot of some other vineyards owned by the Bécot family, an addition which nearly doubled the size of the estate, led to its demotion from Premier Grand Cru Classé status to "only" Grand Cru Classé status in 1979. Relentless work to prove that the new larger estate was as good, if not better, than before paid off in 1996 when Château Beau Séjour Bécot was re-elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. The vineyards are a fairly typical mix of 70% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation is in mostly new oak.
