Who says Chardonnay is boring? This stunning example from Stellenbosch, in South Africa, is one of the best I have tasted outside of France all year. Dombeya's 2012 Chardonnay is aged in French oak, and has a creamy feel in the mouth with top notes of citrus and lime. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Nov 2015)

Intense, clean, tight citrus and nicely savoury on the finish. Sophisticated, especially at this price. Drinking range: 2015 - 2018 Rating: 16/20 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2015)

Pale yellow. Aromas of lemon, pear drop and clove. Silky, concentrated flavors of musky citrus peel, white flowers and oatmeal. Boasts good texture but comes across as rather unforthcoming today, even a bit dry-edged. Finishes with an intriguing umami texture and firm structure. A bit uncompromising at present, this Chardonnay will probably be better for another year or two of patience. Drinking range: 2015 - 2020 Rating: 89 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jun 2015)

Dombeya

The Dombeya range comes from a 23 hectare property in the Helderberg, the sought-after sub-region of Stellenbosch. The estate also makes the 'Haskell Vineyards' range, named after owner preston Haskell. Dombeya was the original name for the estate, taken from a wild pear tree which grows locally.

Founding winemaker Rianie Strydom, who developed the wines here, has now passed over the winemaking to Rudolph Steenkamp, who joined as winemaker and vineyard manager in June 2018. Rudolph has been four years as assistant winemaker at Groot Constantia, and has also worked in France.
