Our second vintage of this classy wine is a great follow on from the 2011. Again this is a delicious example of what can be done in this relatively new apellation (AOC) of Terraces de Larzac within the Côteaux du Languedoc in Southern France. The charming Marie Chauffray is making some brilliant wines here in the high-ground. Since 2004 she and her husband have been working the 12 hectares of vines completely bio-dynamically and the results are great. The Reserve d'O is half and half Grenache and Syrah with just 10% Cinsaut. Grown at over 400 metres the fruit is beautifully ripe - with leafy tobacco notes and a bright spiciness. Aged for 2 years in concrete tanks, there is a lovely deep complexity here but this all remains wonderfully fresh, clever stuff thanks to the cooling nights at this altitude and the reviving Mistral wind which tempers the southern sunshine. L&S (Sept 2014)

Leading off the reds, the 2012 Terrasses du Larzac La Reserve d’O is a stunning example of the quality coming from this up and coming region. Made from 45% Syrah, 45% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, aged in unlined concrete tanks, it exhibits awesome cassis, blackberry, crushed flowers, licorice and spice aromatics. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied red that has terrific purity, a full, layered mid-palate and great finish. In addition to incredibly quality, this is also made in sufficient qualities, with 30,000 bottles made. I was blown away by these latest by Marie and Frédéric Chauffray, and these are some of the most impressive wines in this report. Located in the Terrasses du Larzac region, the estate covers just over 12 hectares of vines planted to Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, most (all?) of which are own rooted (i.e. not grafted to American root stock). While they don’t currently have a US importer, these are superb wines well worth the effort to track down! Rating: 92 Jeb Dunnuck - www.robertparker.com (Jun 2015)

Domaine de La Réserve d'O

Marie and Frederic Chauffray used to run a wine shop, but after studying agronomics, Marie became interested in growing grapes to make her very own wine. In 2004, she discovered a unique, original vineyard situated 400 metres up in the hills overlooking the Vallée de l’Hérault within the appellation Terrasses du Larzac. She was ecstatic. With her husband, Frédéric, they created “La Reserve d’O,” which they have farmed biodynamically from day one. All of the vines on this 12.5 hectares of soils sit on their own roots in poor, stony clayey-calcareous soils. The plateau upon which they sit is swept daily by the Mistral, a serious north wind from the Mediterranean. This special "climat" gives their wines a freshness and originality which differentiate them from the other wines of the area. All work in the vineyard is by hand. The vines now average 30 years of age and are composed of 50% Grenache, 44% Syrah and 6% Cinsault. Their wines are certified organic and biodynamic by Ecocert and Demeter. This way of working with minimal intervention and minimal impact on the environment now also includes the labels and bottles used here. Gone are the beautifully coloured and textured labels of old - replaced with classic designs in black and white on recycled paper - they bring to mind the great labels of wines from Domaine de la Romanée Conti!
