2012 Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin France, Burgundy
District Côte d'Or
Sub-district Côte de Beaune
Village Puligny Montrachet
ABV 13%

The 2012 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a fragrant bouquet that is certainly more forward, fresh and lifted than the premier cru at this early stage, with delightful scents of orange blossom and freshly sliced “zingy” lime. Delicate yet positive fruit. The palate is nicely balanced with a crisp malic entry – vivid green apples here with a taut, linear finish. Insinuatingly moreish, this is very commendable for a village cru and dare I say, superior to the premier cru! Includes seven parcels, all on the Chassagne side of the village, Enseignères, Rousseau, Meix, etc.

Bright, light yellow. Expressive aromas of yellow peach and nut oil. At once densely packed and light on its feet, with a juicy quality and a tactile impression of dry extract to its concentrated stone fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes sappy, saline and long, with serious structure and enticing sweetness. This seems even larger-scaled than the 2010 version. A superb village wine, but then this cuvee almost always is.

Creamy, fleshy body and really snappy apple fruit. Slightly bitter finish. 2014-2018

Rich, ripe aromas of peach and flowers. Concentrated, ripe stone fruit flavors are given focus by sound acidity. Finishes serious and dry, with an edge of acidity and good tension. The 2012 fermentations finished without difficulty, noted Boillot, as he vinifies with selected yeasts.

Jean-Marc Boillot left the family domaine to be winemaker to Olivier Leflaive for five years. Then from his maternal grandfather Étienne Sauzet he inherited much of the vineyard of the old Domaine Sauzet, in some of the best vineyards of Puligny, and with this holding and others from his paternal side, he set up his own business. He makes wines that show well young, with complex exotic fruit aromas with the core of minerality, but they age well too. His daughter Lydie and son are now taking a more active role in the domaine, and they have branched out with a thriving négociant business and a property near the Pic Saint Loup in the Languedoc - Domaine des Roques.
