Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc

Origin South Africa
ABV 14.5%

This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, matured in a combination of new and second-fill oak for 18 to 20 months is Rustenberg's very fine attempt at a Bordeaux style wine. Medium-weight, finely-packed fruit, harmonious and beautifully crafted. L&S (Dec 2014)

Not as leafy as I expected for this wine - at least compared with some older vintages I have tasted. Much more cassis sweetness. And on the palate that herbal quality is barely there. Instead there’s pure dark fruit and fine tannins. Straightforward and finishes just fresh enough. Drinking range: 2015 - 2020 Rating: 16/20 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2015)

From the wine-producing nation recently rated the most dynamic in the southern hemisphere, this is a classic Bordeaux blend with a dash of Malbec. Concentrated, rich, firm and precise, it's packed with blackberry fruit and spicy characters. Tannins and oak will soften with time. (Weekday Wines). Rating: 90+ Decanter Magazine (Oct 2015)

(49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec; aged for 20 months in French barrels, 35% new): Bright red-ruby. Mellow, inviting scents of currant, plum, graphite, cigar box and smoky oak. Silky on entry, then quite firm in the middle, with red berry, mocha and spice flavors firmed on the back end by dusty tannins. A touch of sweetness (3.3 g/l r.s.) is nicely hidden by ripe acidity. Not a particularly big wine considering its 14% alcohol, this stands out for its clarity and class. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jun 2015)

Rustenberg

Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg's wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used: Rustenberg has a history of success with reds.

The viticulturist, Nico Walters, and his dedicated team have been working hard to rejuvenate their vineyards by planting virus-free vines imported from France. A small-scale nursery has been started for propagation, providing available rootstock for upgrading, replanting and experimentation. Controlled irrigation is used when necessary to alleviate stressed vines and maximise the quality of the grapes. All grapes are hand-harvested in the early mornings and all vineyard blocks vinified separately, then blended for added complexity.
