Dark core with wide, bluish rim. Nose leads with dark cherry with violets in the background and some lavender. Big full entry into the mouth where dark chocolate joins the characters advertised on the nose. Super smooth, but definite tannins. Some savoury notes . Overall elegant and well balanced. Long, powerful finish and lots of development to come. Rating: Silver Outstanding International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014 (Oct 2014)

The 2012 Hannibal is a blend of French and Italian grape varieties, hence the name. It debuted back in 2001 from clones first imported to South Africa 12 years earlier. A blend of 39% Sangiovese, 35% Pinot Noir, 10% Nebbiolo, 9% Shiraz, 4% Barbera and 3% Mourvedre, it has an intriguing bouquet that is still tightly wound, unfurling to reveal soy-tinged, dark berry fruit interlaced with black tea, fynbos and a touch of sage. The palate is medium-bodied and quite dense with supple tannins, good acidity and very pure, slightly toasted red fruit that feels sleek and satin-like in the mouth. There is a pleasant graininess coming toward the finish and its freshness and vitality suggest it will repay another couple of years in bottle. Bellisimo. Drinking range: 2015 - 2020 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2014)

Hannibal stands alone by its design and presentation as an individualistic blend of classic Italian and French varieties. In short the name portrays the link between France and Italy with Hannibal the conqueror’s symbolism of the elephants crossing the Alps (as Africa’s association of origin and connection to this wine). Worldly recognized and respected for its commanding taste profile, which is best described as a symphony of flavours. It is both bold and complex with notable back-palate structure while it’s collection of different varieties present a harmonious flavour balance. The colour is marvellously crimson and bright. The composition represents Sangiovese at 39% while the Pinot noir portion is 35%. The remaining 26% is a mix of cultivars consisting of Nebbiolo 10%, Shiraz 9%, Barbera 4% and Mouvedre 3%. Showing both power and finesse it gives way to gentle flavours of black cherry, spice and strawberry. While very approachable at an early age it will mature handsomely over many years ahead! Bouchard Finlayson

Bouchard Finlayson is a top class, internationally-renowned estate situated in Walker Bay, mid-way between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas (the most southerly tip of Africa). The climate is largely influenced by the nearby cold Atlantic Ocean rendering it one of the coolest wine-growing areas in the Cape. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley, home to Bouchard Finlayson, is surrounded and sheltered by a mountain barrier, formed by Galpin Peak (810 metres) and the Tower of Babel (1200 metres), which traps the cloud cover and moisture brought in from the sea by the prevailing wind.

The estate is committed to conservation and sustainable farming, and they strongly believe their BWI membership sets them apart from other winemaking regions in the world. BWI (Biodiversity and Wine Initiative) is a partnership between the South African wine industry and the conservation sector, aimed at protecting the Cape’s rich floral kingdom. To this end, only 19ha of their most precious resource – the land – is under vine in order to preserve the natural indigenous fynbos (a valuable ecosystem).
