RIDGE

2012 Lytton Springs Ridge Vineyards

Grapes Petite Sirah, Zinfandel
Colour Red
Origin USA, California
ABV 14.5%

The 2012 Lytton Springs is quite reserved, compact and inward at this stage. There is good density and depth in the glass, but the elements aren't fully formed just yet. While most of Ridge's 2012s are quite open today, that is not at all the case with the Lytton Springs. The 2012 is going to need time. In 2012, Lytton Springs is 70% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane and 4% Mataro (Mourvèdre). Rating: 93+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jul 2014)

All estate-grown grapes, hand harvested; destemmed and crushed; fermented on the native yeasts, followed by full malolactic on the naturally occurring bacteria; 0.6 grams/liter tartaric acid; minimum effective sulfur for this wine (35 parts per million at crush, 155 ppm over the course of aging). Pad filtered at bottling. In keeping with our philosophy of minimal intervention, this is the sum of our actions. After two unseasonably cool summers, July alone saw eight days over 100˚. In late August, milder temperatures prevailed, providing perfect conditions for a ripe —but not overripe—vintage. Fermentation brought out plentiful color and tannin. During aging, we added wine from one hundred-year-old vines on Hill Five for depth and structure. Spice, brambly fruit, and fine tannins characterize this excellent wine. Enjoyable upon release, it will evolve over the next ten years. 70% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane, 3% Mataro. Ridge Vineyards

Although Ridge Vineyards began in the 1960s, wine has been produced at the site under the name 'Monte Bello Winery' since 1885 when Osea Perrone bought 180 acres of land near the top of Monte Bello. The winery passed through a couple of owners until 1960 when it was bought by four Stanford Research Institute engineers, David Bennion, Charles Rosen, Hewitt Crane, and Howard Zeidler, who produced its first commercial vintage in 1962. Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel account for the largest percentage of the wine produced at Ridge, and it is famous primarily for its reds.
