CHÂTEAU CAMBON LA PELOUSE

2013 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

Deep dark colour, quite oaky, but there's fruit depth and sophistication too. Perhaps losing a little definition in the density, but should turn out fine. Rating: 87 L&S (Apr 2014)

This blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is looked after by the well-known proprietor of Chateau Angelus, Hubert de Bouard. It exhibits a dark ruby color, a medium-bodied mouthfeel, sweet black cherry fruit and a hint of tapenade. A strict selection resulted in only 60% of the crop being utilized. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. 2014-2020 Rating: 85-86 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Although there is richness on the nose it is attractively scented and the palate starts sweet. Black cherry and cassis give a rich feel in the middle but the tannins are hard aggressive tending to hold back the fruit. 2016-26 Rating: 83-87 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Big cassis fruit nose, full and ripe for 2013. Drink: 2017-2022. Rating: 16 Steven Spurrier (Apr 2014)

Château Cambon la Pelouse

One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
