CHÂTEAU CHASSE SPLEEN

2013 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Moulis-en-Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Moulis-en-Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel

Quite a pale colour, almost clairet on the edges. Sharply raspberry-scented fruit with reasonable weight and a real clarety richness in mid-palate, it remains high-toned with obvious acidity and brightness. 2018-2024 Rating: 85 L&S (Apr 2014)

This is a relatively fluid, diluted style of wine with high acidity and not sufficient concentration, depth or ripeness to merit interest. Rating: 76-80 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Bright, deep red-ruby. Blackcurrant, raspberry, licorice and violet on the nose. Juicy, pure and nicely delineated, with fine-grained, extremely primary dark berry, violet and licorice flavors that mount slowly and build well through the persistent finish. The smooth tannins arrive late. Though not especially concentrated or deep, this wine strikes me as having better balance than many 2013s, with enough aromatic lift and fruit to stand up to its tannins. Will offer plenty of early appeal. Rating: 86-89 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

Bramble and bilberry refresh the nose but the palate has more depth more of a black fruited brooding power. There is mid structure but the tannins feel quite ripe the back palate has depth with good length of fruit. 2018-28 Rating: 86-89 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Château Chasse Spleen

Remarkable Chasse-Spleen has always produced high quality wines, which, for the last thirty years, have been worthy of a Third Growth Grand Cru. The English translation of the name of this Cru Bourgeois property is ‘chasing the blues away’, making it one of the most poetic of all names in the Médoc. Owned by Claire Villars, Chasse-Spleen is the leading estate of the little known Moulis appellation, and the wines are of excellent quality. Taking a look around the property (and if you are lucky, being guided round by Jean Pierre Foubet, Claire’s highly entertaining husband) gives you a good idea why they are so well admired. A large estate, although not all plots are next to the château itself; the cellars are impeccably clean, and there is a beautiful tasting room overlooking the barrel cellar and vines.
