CHÂTEAU LA VIOLETTE

2013 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

A successful 2013, La Violette exhibits its tell-tale floral notes intermixed with raspberry and black currant fruit. Medium-bodied and fresh with crisp acids as well as a decent finish, it can be drunk over the next 5-7 years. 2014-2021 Rating: 86-88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Rich on the nose the palate has a black fruited brooding depth. The fruit feels ripe lots of fleshy black plum supple in the middle. There is an underlying freshness but the finish has richness and depth of flavour. 2020-30. Rating: 90-93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

There are only 2,000 bottles of this rich, oak-packed Pomerol to go around, so if you’re keen on this style, you may need to move quickly. Bramble and vanilla are appealingly entwined on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and mineral bite adding support. 2018-24 Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2014)

The La Violette has a voluptuous, decadent bouquet that pays little heed to the limitations of the growing season - everything that you expect from the late Catherine Père-Vergé's luxurious cru. I actually like the palate more than the last two vintages, the tannins filigree and the texture silky smooth with a gentle, seductive and poised finish. Gorgeous. Tasted April 2014. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

Château La Violette

The wines of Château la Violette should be good but, in truth, have only achieved their potential since the vineyard was bought by Catherine Pere-Verge in 2006. The 1.6 ha vineyard sits atop the Pomerol plateau, next to Château Trotanoy and very near Le Pin. Another plot of vines near to Feytit Clinet that came with the purchase is now used for Château Montveil in order to preserve the absolute quality of Château la Violette. With no chai at la Violette, the wines are made at Château le Gay. It is a tiny vineyard – 1.8ha – and the yields are very small. The vines, many of which are over 60 years old, are 100% Merlot and are planted on clay and gravel soil.
