CHÂTEAU LAFON-ROCHET

2013 4ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
Classification 4ème Cru Classé
ABV 13%

First nose is mostly oak. Good fresh creamy texture; very silky, but although the tannins build and the structure seems to be here, the fruit is reticent. A bit monolithic and quite tight on the finish. Rating: 87-88 L&S (Apr 2014)

This is reserved on the nose, although quite oaky. Suave and fleshy, it has underlying tannins that contribute to the considerable complexity, and there's welcome spice on the long finish. Drinking range: 2016 - 2024 Rating: 90 Stephen Brook, Decanter.com (Oct 2016)

This property sits on the border of Pauillac down the street (so to speak) from Cos d’Estournel. The final blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, made with help from consulting oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet. He retired from the Moueix empire in Libourne several years ago and his son is now running things at Chateau Petrus. The wine shows the softness of 2013, with no vegetal characteristics or astringency. It has a relatively superficial, but charming, fruitiness that is medium-bodied with a pleasant finish. Drink over the next 7-10 years. 2014-2024 Rating: 86-88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Good medium ruby. Pure aromas of blackberry, violet and peppermint. Sweet, pliant and almost fleshy, with juicy if slightly simple black fruit and red cherry flavors. Finishes quite persistent, with rich tannins, a suave texture and building density of fruit. Another very well made wine from Michel and Basile Tesseron in what is a difficult vintage: I find there are few more dependable go-to Bordeaux wines in any year than Lafon-Rochet, which is usually great value for the money and rarely disappoints. Rating: 88-90 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint Estèphe Quatrième cru 1855 A somewhat complicated history eventually placed the Rochet vineyard - so named due to its rocky soil - into the hands of the Lafon family in the early years of the 17th Century. The family owned the estate until 1895. It passed through several hands until Guy Tesseron, who's family had prospered in the Cognac business, bought the, now run-down, estate in the 1960's. Guy completely renovated Lafon-Rochet, even to the extent of demolishing all of the delapidated buildings and rebuilding a grand 18th Century style chateau, which was painted yellow to match the labels. Thus Lafon-Rochet are almost unique among Haut-Médoc châteaux in being built in the 20th Century. In the 1960's Château Lafon-Rochet's vineyards consisted of just 15ha of Merlot. Today, there are 41ha under vine, and at a more Médoc-like 54% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin spends up to 20 months in wood (50% ish new). Sitting inland from Cos d'Estournel, facing across the Jalle de Brieul at Duhart Milon and Lafite, Lafon-Rochet has some very noble neighbours. The Tesseron family also own Château Pontet-Canet.
