CHÂTEAU MOULIN SAINT GEORGES

2013 Grand Cru Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru

Even proprietor Alain Vauthier’s perfectionist/obsessive viticultural and winemaking work couldn’t pull out a gem from this small estate in the St. Emilion. He did it with Ausone, but not here. Hard acids, a rather one-dimensional, shallow mouthfeel, but decent fruit in the nose and attack, without any obvious vegetal characteristics or astringent tannins, make for a drinkable, but essentially simple, wine. Consume it over the next 4-5 years. 2014-2019 Rating: 84-86 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Merlot 80% Cabernet Franc 20% Fresh fruited with lots of bramble and a slight herbal tinge there is a lot happening on the nose. It fills out in the middle ripe fleshy strawberry the sweet ripe fruit backed by freshness that gives a lighter feel to the finish. 2017-27. Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Rating: 91 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2014)

(80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) 85% new oak, 14000 bottles. Quite tight and austere with touches of greenness but it’s not in any way sour. The oak seems too strident and dominant att the moment for the fruit which sits in the background. The fruit is foresty and dark but perhaps too demure for the sinew and power loaded into this wine? We shall see in a few years time. Rating: 16.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Apr 2014)

Château Moulin Saint Georges

Owned by Alain Vauthier, Château Moulin Saint Georges is situated in Saint-Emilion and covers 7 hectares. The vineyards are well sited on the south-west facing 'Pavie' slope. The average age of the vines on this slope is 26 years old, and they are planted at a density of 6500 vines/hectare. Vauthier believes that the quality of his wine is a direct result of how well the vines are tended to, therefore yields are kept extremely low in order to concentrate the flavour, and all grapes are hand-harvested to ensure only the best grapes are used in production.
